Authoritarianism Then and Now
Photo by Frederick Wallace on Unsplash In the wake of the 1929 world economic crisis, the German Nazi party encouraged its citizens to use hate and blame for their lack of jobs and the ongoing financial crisis. The leaders of that party turned citizens’ anger toward their neighbors, particularly those of Jewish descent. In addition, Germany’s Nazi party: Ignored Parliamentary Laws and began to govern by a violent fascist dictatorship. Eliminated opposition voices and tr

The Trump Family Dynasty
By Paul Orlando The net worth of Donald J. Trump is estimated by Forbes to be $7.3 billion at present. Since taking office in January of 2025, he leveraged the Presidency for profit to the tune of $3 billion. His cryptocurrency ventures exploded after his victory, adding $2 billion to his wallet. Another 500 million came after a judgement against him stemming from his civil fraud case was lifted by his legal team. And his faltering licensing business surged over $400 million

ICE actions are cruel, inhumane, and illegal
The United States has 52 million immigrants, most of whom are here legally. Trump, during his campaign, promised to expel a million people a year, starting with violent criminals. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has kidnapped and detained 66,000 individuals, 50% of whom have no criminal record. The percent who have a record of violent criminality is less than 10%. Detainees are being held only on civil violation for immigration issues, including green cards. How is

The Struggle for Democracy: Preserving Freedom and Equality in Today’s America
by Cindy Miller - Benton Harbor It’s very difficult to be an American at this point in history. After all the dedicated sacrifice of decades of my family for a land of freedom and equality, to see each hard won success destroyed by the flick of a pen from an autocrat is the very antithesis of what a democracy deserves. Shamefully, hatred seems to be the disheartening drug of choice for too many today. None of us can do much alone against the corporate power that has taken ove

Who will be next???
Donald Trump’s invasion of Venezuela and his kidnapping of their President is in violation of both domestic and international law, and must be condemned. His pretext of stopping narcotics from entering America is laughable, especially since he recently pardoned the Honduran President who was convicted of trafficking over 400 tons of cocaine into the US. This illegal and immoral kidnapping sets a very bad precedent. Who is now to say that Russia kidnapping Zelenskyy or Chin

Democrats want health care for everyone
The federal government is currently shut down because congressional Republicans refuse to negotiate with congressional Democrats on a Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government. Democrats are proposing two health-care related changes to the CR favored by Republicans. The first proposed change is extending the tax credits for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which allow millions of low to moderate income Americans to afford health insurance. Elimination of these credits w

Shutdown Update: Congress Forgot Who It Works For, and Americans Are Paying the Price
By Emma Goos Nearly a month has passed since the government shut down at midnight on October 1. In that time the warnings have become reality. Federal workers are now facing late rent, maxed out credit cards, and a government that refuses to guarantee they will ever see back pay. According to the latest reports, hundreds of thousands remain furloughed without a paycheck while others continue working with no certainty they will be compensated. This shutdown is not frozen in
