Stand up for the truth, and reject conspiracy theories

At the Berrien County Democratic Party, we are deeply concerned about an upcoming event promoted by the local GOP, titled “Battlefield Michigan.” This gathering purports to "uncover the truth" about the January 6th insurrection and the foiled plot to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

The event's promotional materials suggest that these well-documented incidents were orchestrated schemes, questioning the integrity of our federal institutions and the veracity of established facts. Such narratives not only distort reality but also undermine the foundations of our democratic society.

Why This Matters

The January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol was a direct assault on our democratic processes, resulting in numerous injuries and fatalities. Similarly, the plot against Governor Whitmer was a serious threat, leading to multiple convictions. Recasting these events as hoaxes or government conspiracies disrespects the victims and emboldens extremist ideologies.

Our Stance

We believe in the importance of truth, accountability, and the rule of law. Hosting events that promote unfounded conspiracy theories erodes public trust and poses a danger to our community. We urge all residents of Berrien County to critically evaluate the information presented at such gatherings and to stand firm against the spread of misinformation.

We stands firmly with our veterans, law enforcement, and the broader community in defense of our democratic values. We are deeply disappointed by the Berrien County Republican Party’s decision to host an event honoring individuals involved in the January 6th insurrection—an attack that injured police officers and sought to overturn the will of the people.

While we uphold the right to free speech, glorifying an assault on democracy is not only divisive but also harmful to the unity and safety of our community

Democracy thrives when citizens are informed and engaged. We encourage everyone to seek out reputable sources of information, participate in community discussions, and support initiatives that promote transparency and justice. Speak out against divisive actions, attend a local meeting to get involved in positive activism, and write, call and email your representatives. Together, we can uphold the values that define our nation and ensure a safer, more informed community for all.
